John Borg Manduca (08/07/1934-12/02/2021)

Almost a year to the day since Maltese artist John Borg Manduca passed away, an artist monograph dedicated to his art and life by Victor Grech was launched at Westin Dragonara’s The Snug on Saturday February 19.

The lavish publication, was penned on the initiative of Prof. Victor Grech, the artist’s only student, and the artist’s two sons, Juan and Stefan, who wanted to share their father’s artistic legacy and its defining moments. They shared endearing memories through an interview, carried also in the publication, that reveals more sides to the creative man, generally renowned for his seascape and landscape paintings. Stefan Borg Manduca’s words during the book launch expressed this very eloquently: “What a beautiful soul he was, an amazing and loving father, an army man, an artist and a true gentleman, old school.”
In his speech for the book launch, Prof. Richard England, whose wife Myriam happens to be Borg Manduca’s sister, elaborates on this: “The poet’s quotations and John’s canvases harmonise together like the individual instruments of an orchestra to produce a resounding and rewarding audio-visual concerto.”
During his speech, England also emphasised on the improvisatory abilities of the artist who, according to Borg Manduca’s son Stefan’s words in the interview, generally used the paint brush only to sign the finished work. The dexterity in his father’s use of the palette knife was his signature technique.
John Borg Manduca – Landscapes and Seascapes is a must for Maltese art aficionados and collectors of Melitensia. Grech’s eclectic approach in its authorship provides a freshly unorthodox perspective on a Maltese artist who was surely one of the main protagonists of the Maltese 20th-century seascape genre.

Independent review
Dr. Chris Camilleri

I recently had the pleasure of enjoying Prof. Victor Grech's book on the late Maltese artist John Borg Manduca.
Mr. Borg Manduca was an artist who painted mostly seascapes with a palette knife. He passed away last year in 2021. An army Major, his sons Juan and Stefan describe him as a reserved and disciplined man in this book. Nevertheless, his artwork is emotive and dreamy. To add to the sentiment that permeates this book, the painting prints are accompanied by quotes from English poet and sailor John Edward Masefield that evoke nautical imagery.
The book describes the artist's influences, JMW Turner and Aivazovksy. The author - also an established and prolific artist - then relates his experiences as the artist's student. Though their two styles are distinct and easily recognisable, the Borg Manduca legacy is clear. In a sense, John's art lives on through Victor's.
This is not a word-heavy book. If you are looking for a biographical work containing the fine minutae of John Borg Manduca's life, you will not find it here. The scope of this compilation of selected paintings is to revive the memory of an artist and share in his longing for the sea - a longing for our island's bays, inlets and fortified ports, that I am sure will resonate with every Maltese with every page turned.
Highly Recommended.
